What is Cotton?

Cotton is a natural fiber harvested from the fluffy fibers surrounding the seeds inside the cotton plant’s seed capsules. It's the most widely used natural fiber in the world, known for its soft, pleasant feel and wide range of uses.

Cotton is biodegradable and renewable, harvested annually. The cotton plant thrives mainly in warm climates. After harvesting, the cotton goes through several processing steps: the fibers are separated from the seeds and impurities, then carded, spun, and twisted into yarn or thread, which is then used to weave or knit textiles.

What is Organic Cotton?

Organic cotton is grown in much the same way as conventional cotton but without synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or genetically modified (GMO) plants. Instead, natural farming methods such as crop rotation, composting, and biological pest control are used to protect the plants and preserve soil nutrients. Improved cultivation techniques also help the soil retain water better, which can reduce overall water usage.

Because organic cotton is free from chemical residues, it’s gentler on both your skin and the environment. It’s especially suitable for people with sensitive skin or allergies. It also improves working conditions for farmers, who are not exposed to toxic substances.

What are the main characteristics of cotton?

Cotton is a natural, soft, and breathable material that feels comfortable against the skin. It has excellent moisture-wicking properties, drawing sweat away from the body, which makes cotton garments ideal for warm weather.

It’s highly absorbent and can hold moisture like sweat or water efficiently, which is why cotton is commonly used in products that come into contact with moisture. Its natural breathability also makes it feel cool on warm days.

Another key benefit of cotton is its durability. Cotton garments can withstand frequent wear and washing. With proper care, cotton clothing will last a long time and maintain its quality over time.

What types of clothing are made from cotton?

Cotton is an incredibly versatile material used in a wide range of garments – everything from underwear and T-shirts to shirts, trousers, sweaters, and jackets. At Chevalier, we use organic cotton in many of our garments that are worn close to the skin, such as shirts and T-shirts, where comfort and functionality are key.

Cotton is also often blended with other fibers, such as wool or synthetics, to enhance performance and functionality – or with elastane for added stretch.

How do you take care of cotton garments?

Proper care can help preserve both the color and shape of cotton garments, extending their lifespan.

• Always follow the care instructions on the garment’s label – they’re tailored to that specific item.
• Wash at the recommended temperature – most cotton garments can be washed at 40°C. Colored garments should be washed at lower temperatures to preserve the colors. Light and white items can sometimes be washed at higher temperatures, but this may cause shrinkage.
• Use a mild detergent to protect the fibers. To preserve colors, choose a detergent without bleach or optical brighteners.
• Wash with similar colors. Dark or heavily dyed garments can bleed color and stain lighter ones.
• Avoid fabric softeners – they often contain chemicals and preservatives that are harmful to the environment and may irritate sensitive skin. They can also reduce cotton’s absorbency and dull the color of your garments.
• Air drying is the best method for cotton clothing. Some garments can be tumble dried, but we recommend a short, low-heat cycle to reduce energy use, minimize shrinkage, and prevent wear and tear.
• For best results, iron cotton while it’s still slightly damp. Use a medium to high heat setting to smooth out wrinkles.
